Saving with the Time of Use rate plan can be easy. You just need to know which of your appliances and devices require the most electricity, the times of day you can take advantage of off-peak and mid-peak hours, and the habits or new technology you can use to better manage your electricity usage.
Electricity costs less during off-peak and mid-peak hours. Whenever possible, try to schedule high energy activities outside weekday on-peak hours.
Appliances
Many common household appliances use more electricity than you might think:
- Dishwashers
- Washers
- Dryers
Running these appliances during off-peak hours can help lower you overall energy costs under the TOU rate.
Electric Vehicle Charging
Electric vehicles are especially well suited for the TOU rate. Most EVs allow you to schedule charging automatically. Charging overnight during off-peak hours can significantly reduce the cost of charging your vehicle.
Pool Owners
Pool pumps can run for several hours a day and use a significant amount of energy. Running your pool pump during off-peak hours, including overnights and weekends, can help reduce energy costs while keeping your pool well-maintained.
Cooling Your Home
Cooling your home is one of the largest drivers of electric usage. To manage this usage under the TOU rate, you can:
- Pre-cool your home before on-peak hours
- Raise the thermostat slightly during on peak hours
- Use ceiling fans to reduce air conditioning demand
- Seal air leaks and maintain HVAC systems for efficiency
PSE&G has a number of residential energy efficiency programs that can also help you save energy and money year-round.
The Choice is Yours
Moving to the TOU rate is optional and may not be the right choice for everyone. Some customers may benefit more than others, depending on their household schedule and energy habits.
If you are considering a switch to the TOU rate:
